HB-56 "PRESSURE HULL"
A welded steel cylinder, ribbed at intervals, holding back the column of water above it.
The pressure hull was the part of the boat that mattered to depth. Everything else was casing, free flooding, or working space. The cylinder was the survival envelope, the welded joints were the inspection points, and the design depth was the figure the metallurgy and the geometry had agreed on. A boat went deeper than the design depth only when it had to, and only as far as the welds would still answer.
For those who understand that the working envelope of a system is set by the weakest joint in it, every time.
Harborborne. Built to Endure.
