HB-40 "ISLAND"
A superstructure offset to starboard. The flying deck, kept clear.
The island was the working centre of the ship. Bridge, flight control, funnel, fire control, and the radar antennas above. Offsetting it to one side cleared the deck for the wing. Almost every fleet carrier built after the first generation followed the arrangement, and the variations between navies were small. The arithmetic of clear deck space settled the question early.
For those who understand that the right answer to a hard layout problem is sometimes to put the second thing out of the way of the first.
