HB-64 "WAR PATROL REPORT"
A standard form, completed in long hand, filed at the end of every patrol. The historical record of the boat's war.
The war patrol report ran to dozens of pages. Times, courses, contacts, attacks, weather, mechanical issues, expenditure of ordnance, and the captain's narrative. The reports were declassified slowly and read by historians over the decades that followed. The day by day texture of the submarine campaign survives in those forms. The histories you read are mostly drawn from them.
For those who understand that the long form record is what makes any campaign legible after the fact.
