The campaign measured itself in tonnes, not in flags.
The Pacific submarine arm did not chase battleships. It chased the merchant fleet that fed the empire those battleships protected. Through 1944 the rate of sinkings exceeded the rate of replacement and the strategic position collapsed from the inside out. The patrol reports read in tonnage. The histories, written later, read in the same figures.
For those who understand that the war against a logistic system is fought by ones and twos, and counted by the tonne.
