The interwar treaties set displacement and armament ceilings on every new capital ship. Naval architects worked inside the limits and learned to write more capability per ton than any previous generation. The ships that came out of the period were the most thoroughly optimised any navy had ever built. The limits were broken by mutual exit before the second war started. The discipline they imposed left a permanent mark on what good design looked like.
