The task force replaced the standing fleet as the working unit of the Pacific campaign. Composition was tailored to the operation. A fast carrier task force ran with destroyers in screen, cruisers in support, and fleet oilers in tow. The unit was self sustaining for weeks. The fleet at anchor was for refit. The fleet at sea was the task force.
