The snorkel let the boat run her diesels submerged. Endurance grew, exposure shrank, and a boat that had previously spent most of her time on the surface could now sit just under it for days. The technology was simple, the change in operating profile was not. The snorkel head was the new thing for the escorts to look for. The boat below it was the same boat as before.
