Through the four years of the Pacific war, the submarine arm of the United States Navy operated as a fraction of the surface fleet and accounted for the majority of Japanese merchant losses. The work was unrecorded outside the patrol reports. Crews went under at dusk, ran on the surface at night, and came home thinner than they left. The campaign was decisive in a way the public never quite understood.
