Motors slow ahead. Pumps off. Galley cold. Crew on stockinged feet.
Silent running was the boat's defence against sonar pursuit. Everything that made noise was shut down or turned over by hand. The crew moved in soft shoes and spoke in undertones. A surface escort working a sonar bearing was looking for a signal that, for a well drilled boat, was below the ambient noise of the ocean itself. The drill was a discipline of small absences, held for as long as the pursuit lasted.
For those who understand that the absence of signal is sometimes more deliberate than any signal sent.
