The pre-dreadnought battleship carried a mixed armament because no single calibre yet did all the work navies required. Heavy guns formed the main battery, medium-calibre weapons added volume of fire, and lighter guns defended against torpedo boats. It was a practical answer for its era, but HMS Dreadnought's launch in 1906 established a new dominant battleship standard.
For those who understand that the cleanest design problems are often the ones you solve only after living with the messy version for a while.
