Sixty feet under. The periscope clearing the wave tops. The boat trimmed to a few inches of accuracy.
Periscope depth was the working depth for an approach. Shallow enough to see, deep enough to be unseen, and trimmed so finely that a movement of crew weight inside the hull would shift the boat. The technique was a matter of practice. A boat that held depth cleanly through an approach had a steady solution. A boat that did not had to start the approach again. Most attacks were won or lost in the minutes before the launch.
