Sixty days at sea, a station to keep, and a report to file at the end.
The war patrol was the unit of the boat's working life. Departure from base, transit to station, work in the patrol area, transit home, and the report. Most of the patrol was uneventful. The events were measured in single contacts, each with its own attack run, salvo, evasion, and reload. The patrols read short on the page and long in the diary. The arithmetic of the campaign was the sum of the patrols.
