Battlecruiser designers pushed length-to-beam ratios to eight to one and beyond. The hulls were long, fine, and structurally more demanding than the squatter battleships of the same era. The reward was hydrodynamic, paid back in knots. The price was reduced metacentric stability and a longer ship to armour, which usually meant less armour to go round.
