USS Wisconsin fired the final naval gunfire-support mission of the Gulf War with her 16-inch guns in 1991.
The Iowa class was laid down in the early 1940s, returned to service at different points across the following decades, and used for shore bombardment in the Gulf War. The ships outlived the doctrine that built them and ended their service supporting a kind of warfare that had not existed when their keels were laid. Their final combat use marked the close of an era in capital-ship gunnery.
For those who understand that some tools earn a last useful day long after the textbook had retired them.
