A row of microphones along the hull, listening to the ocean for a signature.
The hydrophone was the boat's primary sensor underwater. A skilled operator could identify ship type, range, bearing, and sometimes ship name from the screw beats alone. The instrument did not emit. It only listened. Most of the boat's underwater contacts were made on the hydrophone first, and the periscope only confirmed what the operator had already heard.
For those who understand that listening, carefully, gives more away about a target than any signal you could send.
