The gunnery officer translated bearing, range, target course, target speed, and own ship motion into a firing solution and a moment to fire. The instruments were mechanical, the corrections were running, and the answer needed to be right before the target had moved out of the figure. Every shell fired against a moving target at long range was the output of his desk.
