HB-21 "PRE-DREADNOUGHT"
Two heavy guns, several mediums, several lights. A whole battery of compromises.
The pre-dreadnought battleship carried a mixed armament because no single calibre yet did all the work the navies wanted from it. Heavy guns for the long ranges they could not yet reliably reach. Medium guns for the close ranges they expected to fight at. Light guns against torpedo boats. The arrangement was the best engineering of its decade, and was rendered obsolete by one launch in 1906.
For those who understand that the cleanest design problems are often the ones you solve only after living with the messy version for a while.
