HB-15 "CORAL SEA"
The first naval battle in which the opposing ships never sighted each other.
In the first week of May 1942, two carrier task forces traded strikes across the Coral Sea. Aircraft did the work that line-of-sight gunnery had done in every previous engagement. One fleet carrier was lost on each side. The tactical result was contested. The strategic result was that a planned amphibious operation against Port Moresby was turned back. The new way of fighting had passed its first full test.
For those who understand that a new kind of action is sometimes settled before either side fully accepts what just happened.
