HB-29 "FIRE CONTROL"
A mechanical computer, the size of a small room, running the firing solution for the heaviest guns afloat.
The fire control table received bearing, range, target course, target speed, wind, and own ship motion through pointers and dials. It output a continuous gun bearing and elevation, updated as fast as the inputs changed. The boxes were the most complex mechanical objects on board, and the men who maintained them were among the most trained on the ship. The accuracy of the heaviest weapons in the world depended on a row of gears in a clean compartment two decks down.
For those who understand that the precision of any large system is set by the smallest mechanism inside it.
