HB-42 "ESCORT CARRIER"

Sale price$99.00

A merchant hull, a short deck, half a wing. The cheapest carrier any navy ever built. Also one of the most useful.

The escort carrier was a wartime expedient that closed the air gap in the mid-Atlantic. Tankers, dry cargo, and grain ships were converted at the rate the shipyards could turn them out. Two squadrons of aircraft, a radar, and a deck just long enough for the type. By 1944 the air gap had closed and the convoy battle had tipped. The work was done by ships that, at sight, did not look like warships at all.

For those who understand that the right capability at the right time matters more than what the type is supposed to look like.
