Four on, eight off. The clock that runs the boat.
The deep watch was the rhythm of the submarine at sea. Three watches, rotating, day and night, for the length of the patrol. The boat itself never slept. Off watch was sleep, mess, work on the boat, and back on watch. The clock did not change for weather, for transit, or for the eventfulness of the day. The discipline was the routine. The routine was the patrol.
