The crash dive was the boat's response to an aircraft sighting on the surface. The drill was timed in single seconds. Bridge watch down the hatch, the hatch sealed, vents open, ballast in. A well drilled crew could put the boat under in under thirty. A boat that took longer than that was sometimes already in trouble by the time the conning tower went under.
