The catapult solved the problem that grew with every new generation of carrier aircraft. Heavier loads, faster stall speeds, the same length of deck. Hydraulic catapults gave way to steam in the post war fleet. Steam gave way to electromagnetic in the modern. The figures changed and the geometry stayed the same. A deck, an aircraft, and a way of putting one into the air faster than gravity wanted.
For those who understand that scaling a routine sometimes asks for a new mechanism, not a longer runway.
