HB-36 "CARRIER DOCTRINE"
Strike, scout, defend, repeat. A doctrine written in flight hours.
Carrier doctrine in the Pacific resolved itself across the first eighteen months of the war. The carrier was not a battleship with aircraft. It was a striking element built around the air wing. Screen the carrier, push the air wing out at the target, recover it, and turn the cycle as fast as the deck would allow. The doctrine separated cleanly from the surface gunnery school and never quite went back.
For those who understand that a tool changes its doctrine before the textbook gets around to writing the change down.
