Two words that, for forty years, determined how nations counted their navies.
The capital ship was the unit by which fleet strength was measured between 1906 and 1945. Treaties were negotiated around it. Budgets were defended in its name. Doctrines were written assuming it would be on the field. When the doctrine quietly changed in the middle of the second war, the term lasted decades longer than the type of ship it had originally meant.
