Two compartments. Hundreds of lead acid cells. The whole submerged endurance of the boat held in chemistry.
The battery rooms held the cells that powered the boat underwater. The cells were heavy, the wiring was thick, and the ventilation was non-negotiable. Hydrogen evolved during charge, and a closed compartment with hydrogen evolved was a known way to lose a boat. The discipline around battery state, charge state, ventilation state, and inspection was one of the longest and most strictly enforced in the boat's standing orders.
For those who understand that the most important compartment on the ship is often the one whose discipline is the most boring.
