HB-27 "ARMOUR BELT"
A band of steel, fitted at the waterline, doing the work that the rest of the displacement budget could not justify.
The main belt ran along the citadel of the ship, covering machinery and magazines, sloped where geometry allowed it, layered where the metallurgy did. Thicknesses ran from ten to fifteen inches on the heaviest types, and the cost in displacement was paid in length, beam, or speed elsewhere. The arithmetic was honest. You could not have all of it. The belt was where the answer to that arithmetic was written down.
