A small angle that changed everything.
Before the angled deck, a carrier could either launch aircraft or recover them, never both. A barrier crossed the centreline. A bad approach meant a crash into parked planes. Jet speeds made this arithmetic impossible.
Then someone drew a line a few degrees off centre. Now landings ran past the launch lane, not into it. Two operations on one ship at the same time. Modern carrier aviation became possible.
