A small angle that changed everything.
Before the angled deck, a carrier could either launch aircraft or recover them, never both. A barrier crossed the centreline. A bad approach meant a crash into parked planes. Jet speeds made this arithmetic impossible.
Then someone drew a line a few degrees off centre. Now landings ran past the launch lane, not into it. Two operations on one ship at the same time. Modern carrier aviation became possible.
For those who understand that the right idea, properly applied, can quietly do the work of a hundred louder ones.
