One calibre, one fire control problem, one decisive broadside.
The all big gun principle replaced the mixed armament of the pre-dreadnought era with a uniform main battery of heavy guns. Fire control could now run a single solution instead of several. Broadsides were larger and easier to correct. The arrangement defined what a battleship was for the next four decades, and the design office that drew it first held the lead for the rest of the type's history.
