The Air War · 1941–1945

The Second World War in the air, told by the warbirds and the days they flew. First up, the P-51: over Berlin on 8 March 1944, and to Tokyo on 7 April 1945. Original artwork; aircraft drawn with no markings. Remembered by the date, not slogans.

The Flight Log

Every warbird has a day.

Pencil-style sketch on a taped note card: four escort fighters in a loose formation high over a city and its river, with a distant box of bombers ahead. Captioned 8 March 1944, long-range escort over Berlin, 174 escort fighters.

She stayed with them all the way to Berlin.

The long-range escort, from Berlin to Tokyo.

By March 1944 the U.S. bombing campaign against Germany had the long-range, high-altitude escort it had sorely needed. On 8 March, 174 P-51s escorted 462 bombers over Berlin. On 7 April 1945, on the other side of the world, P-51s based on Iwo Jima flew their first escort missions to Japan, with the bombers bound for a target in Tokyo.
